Open a Patient Chart via the Patient List

Use the following steps to open a patient chart via the Patient List.

  1. In the Patient List drop-down, select the Patient List.

  2. In the search field below the drop-down list, enter the first few letters of the patient's last name. You can also enter a comma and then enter the first few letters of the patient's first name. The system will then return the results of that search.

The search criteria can be further refined by adding or subtracting letters of the patient's name, or  by modifying the Search Column and Search Type fields at the bottom of the Patient List.

NOTE: You can also click the Patient List drop-down and the last five patients that were accessed will be displayed for the duration that the Clinical application is open. This feature is reset once the Clinical application is closed.

  3. Once the patient has been found, highlight the patient, and then click the Open button.

NOTE: When viewing patients, inactive patients will not be displayed unless the Inactive Patients options has been checked via the View menu (View > Inactive Patients). If the Inactive Patients option is selected, all applicable patients (active and inactive) will be displayed in the patient list; if this option is not selected, inactive patients will not be displayed.

NOTE: If the patient's chart you are trying to open is restricted and you are not an authorized user, you will receive one of two messages. If you receive the message, "Your account has been restricted from accessing this chart," you will not be able to access this patient's chart because you do not have privilege to view this chart. If you receive the message, "Your account has been restricted from accessing this chart. You have the ability to override this restriction (aka "Break The Glass"). However, your actions will be audited," you can override the restriction by clicking the Yes button in the warning dialog. Users will receive this latter message only when they have the Break the Glass privilege.

NOTE: If the patient's chart is currently locked due to another user having that chart open, you have the ability to Take Control of the Chart if you have the Break Chart Lock privilege, however, when breaking the chart lock be aware that any data entered by the original user will be lost.
