EPCS

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Diversion Control, EPCS stands for Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances.The DEA’s rule allows all practitioners the ability to write electronic prescriptions for controlled substances . In addition, it will also permit pharmacies to receive, dispense, and archive these electronic prescriptions. The rule was published in the Federal Register Wednesday, March 31, 2010 and became effective on June 1, 2010. As of 2015, EPCS is legal in 49 states. The ultimate goals of EPCS according to Surescripts include reducing fraud and abuse, securing electronic record, and improving safety and patient care.

SUBMITTING INCIDENT REPORTS: If you have noticed suspicious activity related to EPCS in the ChartMaker® Clinical audit trail or automated logs, the EPCS prescriber must report the event to their vendor as well as the DEA within 1 business day. Per federal regulations, the Daily Incident Report should be reviewed within 1 business day of receiving it and the Monthly Drug Log should be reviewed within 7 calendar days. ePA

Electronic Prior Authorization (ePA) is the process of sending a request to prescribe a medication flagged as requiring approval to the Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) via the computer.  Prior Authorization is typically required on medications that may have dangerous side effects, may be harmful when combined with other medications, are often abused and/or have a less-expensive alternative.

Benefits of ePA

The Traditional Prior Authorization process is complex and time-consuming. Many steps are taken between the time the initial prescription is written, the processing at the pharmacy and when the patient finally receives their prescription.

Performing this process electronically means that an approval can typically come back prior to the patient leaving your office since time-consuming phone calls or faxes, which greatly slow down the process, have been eliminated.
