What is EPCS?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Diversion Control, EPCS stands for Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances.The DEA’s rule allows all practitioners the ability to write electronic prescriptions for controlled substances . In addition, it will also permit pharmacies to receive, dispense, and archive these electronic prescriptions. The rule was published in the Federal Register Wednesday, March 31, 2010 and became effective on June 1, 2010. As of 2015, EPCS is legal in 49 states. The ultimate goals of EPCS according to Surescripts include reducing fraud and abuse, securing electronic record, and improving safety and patient care

IdenTrust Token Purchase

STI Computer Services, Inc has partnered with IdenTrust, to provide the identity proofing and issuance of Digital Certificate tokens that are used to digitally sign and electronically send prescriptions for controlled substances. By providing the required information to IdenTrust, you will have the ability to seamlessly complete remote identity proofing that will be valid for two years.

Enrolling for EPCS

To enroll for EPCS, please keep in mind the following: You must be upgraded to ChartMaker 2015, File Version or above. You will need to purchase an IdenTrust token for each provider that intends to electronically prescribe controlled substances. EPCS enrollments for providers whose data is hosted off site (i.e. database is not on a server at your office) are not being accepted at this time, but will be available shortly. STI will notify you as soon as these enrollments will be accepted and processed

Important Notices Regarding EPCS

SUBMITTING INCIDENT REPORTS: If you have noticed suspicious activity related to EPCS in the ChartMaker® Clinical audit trail or automated logs, the EPCS prescriber must report the event to their vendor as well as the DEA within 1 business day. Per federal regulations, the Daily Incident Report should be reviewed within 1 business day of receiving it and the Monthly Drug Log should be reviewed within 7 calendar days. E-PRESCRIBING MANDATE: As of 2015, EPCS is legal in 49 states and may be mandatory for providers in certain states. If you are a medical provider interested in EPCS services thru a certified EHR Software, please contact our Sales Department.
